3 Ways to Winterize Your Screened-in Porch/Patio

Screened In Patio Installation

It’s that time of year again! As the temperature starts to decrease, you may want to consider winterizing your screened-in porch or patio.

Winterizing a screened-in porch is important to make it comfortable during colder months. Here are the top three ways to winterize a screened-in porch:

1. Add Weatherproof Curtains or Plastic Film:

Install heavy-duty, weather-resistant curtains or plastic film to create a barrier against cold drafts. This helps to retain heat inside the porch and block out wind. Make sure the curtains or film are securely fastened and cover the entire screened area. Velcro strips or heavy-duty clips can be used to attach them to the porch frame. Opt for materials that are designed to withstand the elements and are easy to clean.

2. Install Insulated Panels:

Consider installing insulated panels that fit into the existing screen frames. These panels are typically made of materials like acrylic or polycarbonate and provide additional insulation to keep the cold air out. Insulated panels are transparent, allowing natural light to enter while providing thermal insulation. Some panels are designed to be easily removable, allowing you to switch between a screened porch in warmer months and an enclosed space in the winter.

3. Use Space Heaters or Radiant Heating:

Introduce heating elements to maintain a comfortable temperature in the screened-in porch. Electric space heaters, especially infrared models, can effectively warm up the space. Make sure to follow safety guidelines and keep flammable materials away from the heater. Another option is radiant floor heating, which can be installed under the porch flooring. This type of heating warms the floor, providing a comfortable and even heat distribution throughout the space. Always consult with a professional before installing any heating system.

Remember to also inspect the porch for any gaps or areas where cold air might seep in and seal them appropriately. Additionally, if you have furniture or other items in the porch that may be negatively affected, consider covering them or moving them indoors during the winter to protect them from the elements.
